Giant Skeletons

There’s been a recent wave in the email circulation of archaeological evidence for giants, usually with a tagline that this is proof of the Bible’s accuracy.

I might suggest a simple principle for dealing with matters like this in the future: if you heard about it first in an email forward, it’s not true.

Indeed, these photographs were created for a contest for images of an archaeological hoax.  These came in third place in a 2002 competition.

Circulation of the images as “real” apparently began in 2004.  National Geographic debunked them in 2007.  PaleoBabble posted on them in February.  Truth or Fiction has a full copy of the email that I’ve been forwarded many times now.

  • The biggest question I had from this post was "What were the top two finishers in the contest?"

someday somebody's going to do some killer research on the effect of email forwards on American folk religion.

  • What I find interesting about this is wondering about who put together this false story. I assume it is:

    1) A non believer who thought it would be funny to pull the legs of the weak minded Bible readers.

    2) Some Christian (or Jew) who sought to strengthen the faith of others by using an obvious falsehood. A modern equivalent of the countless early church and middle ages church legends.

    3) Some Christian (or Jew) who saw this prank, didn’t realize what it was, and jumped to a unfounded conclusion.

There are lots of others of these roaming around. Every Easter I get the “Folded Napkin” e-mail that is equally baseless.

If some Christian created this to encourage Christians, knowing it was false, he/she deserves a major dope slap on the back of the head.

  • The giants in the Bible known as the Nephilim or their tribal name of the Amorites were real. Their skeletal remains are consistent with the Upper Paleolithic Cro Magnon who were also of great size.
"The Nephilim Chronicles: Fallen Angels in the Ohio Valley" is a good book, (based on historical evidence) that proves the Bible's claims of a giant race to be true.
