I suggest <A HREF="http://www.bombaxo.com/blog/?p=271" REL="nofollow">here</A> that there's plenty of evidence supporting a Church of Mary Theotokos as the origin of the floorplan (and perhaps some elements still in use) of the Dome of the Rock. Further associated churches on the esplanade are also likely, or perhaps a monastery complex related to the church, which undoubtedly would've been a major pilgrimage site in the late Byzantine period in the Holy Land.Kevin P.
